The Future of Culture in Egypt

Culture - Foresight

The Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936 marked an important milestone in the course of the national struggle to rid Egypt of the detested British colonial occupation. Despite its limited impact and failure to achieve complete independence, it ignited national sentiments and infused Egyptian society with hope, particularly among political forces and leading intellectual figures of the time. Foremost among them was Dr. Taha Hussein, who sensed the gravity of the moment and the importance of fulfilling his enlightening role, prompting him to write his book The Future of Culture in Egypt.

In this book, Taha Hussein presents solutions to many of the problems that stood as obstacles on the path toward building the future, especially at a time when colonialism was undermining every step along that road. This was reflected in issues such as education, identity, freedom, political and parliamentary life, and many other foundations essential to nation-building.
